It's trending lower than the GBA too. Nintendo has not had handheld sales this soft since the 1990s before Pokemon was created.

That's a big part of the reason why the "doesn't matter if Wii U bombs, like the GameCube days, Nintendo will just make money off their handheld" doesn't work and they are in fact posting operating losses (3 years counting now).

GBA didn't have to fight Smartphone encroachment.

Compare 3DS to Vita...

Both the 3DS & Vita are selling worse then the DS/PSP.

3DS numbers aren't bad, but they are still 50% of DS #'s. Vita's doing bad because the lack of 1st party support. I mean I want a Vita and so far the only game I want is Uncharted (not a Killzone fan, and Resistance is meh).

Do you think franchise fatigue plays no role at all in 3DS's/WiiU's poorer sales?

Yes franchise fatigue plays a part, but people also underestimate how "fresh" Mario seemed last gen, because what happened is Wii Sports/Brain Training/Wii Fit etc. brought in all these people who hadn't bought a Nintendo console since the NES or SNES and wouldn't have bought one otherwise. But once they were there, suddenly Mario seemed like a very nice thing to induldge in as they hadn't played a Mario or Mario Kart in 10-15+ years for a lot of people.

That aspect is also gone from Nintendo this generation, now it's just "oh another New Super Mario Bros", even though NSMBU honestly is a better game than either the DS or Wii ones.
