DS and PSP were not under as much threat from smartphones, and PSP had Monster Hunter to fave its bacon.

Since software drives hardware, Mario fatigue has indeed resulted in it pushing less hardware in my view, yes.

That's true, and PSP had a lot more then just Monster Hunter. Gran Turismo, God of War, Grand Theft Auto, plus lots of support from Square Enix (Crisis Core, FF remakes, etc)
