There's nothing wrong with Mario 3D World. It has everything a new Mario should - The full gamut of Mario levels everyone wants ... plains, tropical, winter/ice, lava, Bowser castles, ghost houses, space/galaxy themed. Unlike Sunshine which had Mario stuck on a tropical island. - Great soundtrack with plenty of orchestral and violin and flute tracks.
- Nice graphics.
- Terrific powerups. Unlike Sunshine. - Great level design. - Lots of nostalgic throwback (references to SMB, SMB2 USA, SMB3, Super Mario 64, Super Mario Galaxy) - Finally good multiplayer as well. - Good challenge ... yes the post-game content will make even Mario vets sweat.
The only Mario staple that 3D World doesn't have is Yoshi. If Nintendo had called it Super Mario U instead of Mario 3D World, I don't think anyone would have a problem with it, it's a shame there's a small group of people who still can't get over the initial E3 trailer, which was a very poor representation of the game, even after the game was given unanimously great reviews from the gaming press (many of whom are jaded towards Nintendo).

Don't get me wrong, 3D World is a great game.
I just think a 64/galaxy esque breakthrough or Mario 64 II would have been more desired by fans.

Mario 64 was groundbreaking because it was the first 3D Mario, that's never going to happen again.
Really there wasn't anything groundbreaking about Mario Galaxy, it was just a really well executed Mario game. Just like Mario 3D World is.
If anything the introduction of multiplayer to 3D Mario is a bigger leap than anything Galaxy did gameplay wise.

Mario Galaxy was fresh and epic with its space setting, 3D gravity physics, and blockbuster presentation. 3D World is much more tame in that it follows the blueprint of 3DS game.

3D World has as much in common with the Galaxy games as it does with 3D Land. The second half of the game is basically Galaxy 3 as far as I'm concerned.
To be honest too the "upside-down gravity" sections of the Galaxy games weren't all that fun. More disorienting than anything else.
3D World is easily up there with Galaxy 1/2 as the three best Nintendo made games of the last 10 years.
The fact of the matter is Mario Galaxy would only sell 5-6 million LTD at best if the Wii's userbase was crippled to only 15-20 million like the Wii U is headed for.
Mario alone does not make a home console successful on its own, otherwise every Nintendo console would be a big success.
