Serious hardware as in Mario 64 was one of the foremost killer apps for the console, the game people got an N64 to play.
You really think people expect as much ambition out of Smash and Kart as they do from a next gen 3D Mario? Did Smash and Kart's E3 reveals generate anywhere near the negative backlash 3D World's did? No, they didn't.
Because people expect Kart and Smash to iterate, while they expect more from 3D Mario.
