Nope.
Games haven't gotten better over the generations; more complex maybe, but not overall better. For every improvement they come up with, they come up with a new drawback.

I've seen gaming since 1994 and I'd say game quality has been largely static since then.

Graphics can be exploited to extend variety a great deal. You would never have experienced RE4 on a SNES :P

3D is a huge step forward that changed the way we percieve and interact with video games. It expanded our imagination, and increased our expectations. The possiblities are almost infinite as compared to SNES games. And that has indeed changed the standards. The standards will continue to change no matter how loyal we are to what we loved.

Of course I'm not saying that a PS4 game is by defaul better than SNES's best. But the environment itself is a massive upgrade. It's just up the developer to decide what they want to do with it. Since there have been many games that did harness this environment, the standards have gone up as well!

But along with the improvements have come steps backwards; games trying to be movies, QTEs, excessively scripted setpieces, story and graphics prioritized over gameplay, etc.
