At least Nintendo has wins there, unlike other companies. The adults who buy Sony and Microsoft machines and shun Nintendo are usually manchildren; they are the same people you'll find on internet forums, so their level of maturity is more than just a bit questionable. It's also the reason why video games still haven't attained the same respect as other media; if this were movies, Sony and Microsoft are basically betting on Steven Seagal, Chuck Norris and Michael Bay movies; a primitive audience that actually believes that ratings determine the maturity of the content they consume. |
You can call them every name in the book ... the fact is that audience is simply more reliable and has the disposal income and free time to play a lot of games. "Manchildren" are still adults and the $400 they pay for their hardware and $60 a pop for each game they're willing to buy still counts (just like the $8/pop they're willing to shell out for every superhero movie keeps Hollywood swimming in cash).
Games will never be movies, people just need to accept that and move on, movies are their own distinct entertainment medium. Sometimes I just want a story told to me in 2 hours, not something that requires 20 hour time commitment that involves me running around "area X/Y/Z" trying to find "magical key/item Z/X/Y". By their structure alone these are not even remotely similar entertainment mediums (even those "cinematic" games).
