I think may be it's just more simple than that ... Nintendo's "vision" of what a home console should be ... something kid friendly and family fun oriented first and foremost is something that simply doesn't jive with the popular opinion of the marketplace, as much as Nintendo fanatics may make a huge fuss about it on the internet.

Sony's vision of the home console is actually more in line with what the masses and development community want and Nintendo really hasn't been able to ever have the same consistent success in the console biz ever since Sony entered the marketplace and made gaming "acceptable" and primarily marketed to older teenagers and college aged students mainly.

Kids don't even want a kids console, which is one huge problem, they want the more violent games by the time they turn 11/12 years old and want to play what the older kids are playing, which gives Nintendo an extremely small niche age range of 6-10 year olds to really target before they lose many of these kids to Sony/MS.

People don't want a toy when they're buying a console any more, and I think Nintendo never really has been able to cope with this. The Wii was just a temporary craze that's passed, and now the natural erosion of Nintendo's console market has continued like clockwork. The fact that Nintendo manages to make several self-inflicted mistakes each generation doesn't help though.

The simple solution for Nintendo is to target adults, because neither Sony, Microsoft or third parties do it. Nintendo did this with the Wii, they didn't with the Wii U.

Nintendo's just not very good at targetting adults though. The have more misses than wins there. Part of the reason is targetting adults is hard work and Nintendo doesn't like to do all the work required -- you have to constantly market for one, something Nintendo abhors. And last I checked anyone over the age of 18 is an adult, and large portions of Sony/MS' market base is that 18-34 year old male gamer.

Nintendo doesn't like competetion either, Iwata even said straight up they don't like to compete, lol.
