The Wii U has some fantastic arguments for it. No subscription, notably cheaper, almost all the big titles are exclusive, and a second screen so it isn't always dependent on the TV to do things.
Thing is they have to SELL that. Nintendo needs to advertise. They never do that.
I expect Nintendo will go forward with the titles they have planned for it, and if the big blockbusters like Bayonetta 2, Zelda, or X don't do something for the system they'll start switching to 3DS. And don't get me wrong: they'll give the systems a nice bump, but it won't save the system. I'm guessing the Wii U will get quietly discontinued in 2016. That's enough support most fans won't rage-quit Nintendo, but not so much it'll bankrupt them.
The 3DS will probably start showing age about that time, too, although the added support might give it another year or so. I imagine Nintendo will probably have a portable-console hybrid succeed both.
