The popularity of a character isn't mutually inclusive with quality of a game or its sales reception. There are more factors at work than just the popularity of a character.

I think when the name of the character is in big capital letters as the actual name of the game, its a big pull for that game.

Granted, there is a lot wrong with the XIII saga and Lightning as a character isnt the only problem. Im not saying that. Im saying Lightning is a part of the problem.

Constant milking of XIII, do we live in the same world? It has 3 games in one generation and that's the extent of it. It's not being dragged along in spin-offs or social/mobile versions. Each of the 3 were full-fledged games with a lot of content.

Main series Final Fantasy titles.

Gen 3 -

Final Fantasy
Final Fantasy II
Final Fantasy III

Gen 4 -

Final Fantasy IV
Final Fantasy V
Final Fantasy VI

Gen 5 -

Final Fantasy VII
Final Fantasy VIII
Final Fantasy IX

Gen 6 -

Final Fantasy X
Final Fantasy X-2
Final Fantasy XI Online
Final Fantasy XII

Gen 7 -

Final Fantasy XIII
Final Fantasy XIII-2
Lightning Returns: Final Fantasy XIII
Final Fantasy XIV

Every generation since Final Fantasy was released, we have had 3 brand new Final Fantasy numbered titles. Gen 7, with the XIII saga, is the only generation where we have had 3 flagship titles from the same series. What highlights that milking more than anything is the number of reused assets, which Toriyama has even admitted himself. Its not quite on the level of Final Fantasy VII Compilation, but boy oh boy have they tried. Im actually thinking that Lightning Returns is going to be the lowest selling in the series since the SNES days.

They milked XIII. People are done with XIII. Time to move on, and they know it.
