Perhaps an NPD adjustment month. If they mess up in previous months, they post an unusually high or low amount to bring the lifetime numbers in line with reality.

Yeah, it happened quite a lot at the start of last gen. The xbone increase makes no sense at all... why did thousands of people wait until February, instead of January, to buy one?

Got direct deposit? Only takes 2 weeks to get your federal return. Jobs need to give forms by January 31st.
Increase can easily be attributed to tax return.
