given how dumb that thing looks i imagine a ton of people will refuse to even try it. 

When word starts spreading of how good it is those people will eventually have to try it. It's as intuitive as motion controls but with a whole extra level of immersion.

we'll see.  i'd like to try it myself but i have a group of "causual" friends that i often like to talk to for their perspective to help me with my objectivity.  i brought up OR to them and while they had all heard of it none had any interest.  it's just soo damn nerdy.  i'm somewhat open to it but i dunno,.. i'm not sure i can endure the endless ridicule i'm sure my wife would give me if i ever put one on.

Personally, I think word of mouth will be what helps it spread. It's still far too early for most people to have any grasp of how well it works, but given time, they will.
