- Lets say Nintendo releases a 3TFLOP console in fall 2015 or 2016 that is as powerful as a PS4 + XB1 combined. Regular controller. Really not hard as there already are PC GPUs available today that can pull this off. Aimed at perhaps giving Nintendo a shot at finishing no.2 at the end of this generation ... Sony won't be caught? But Microsoft? That's still doable I think. Nintendo waives third party licensing fees for the first year to get third parties hooked on supporting the system early, and drops their other usual BS with third parties. Basically just a PC GPU for devs, that also has Nintendo games on it, in an ecosystem controlled by Nintendo.

Dreamcast tried that.

Though the Dreamcast launched at the tail end of the N64/PSX generation only about a year before the PS2, that might have turned out quite differently if they could have gotten clear for say a 3 year headstart.

That and Sega was financially already in big trouble anyway.

I got the feeling a lot of people actually liked the Dreamcast or were amenable to it, but wanted to wait a year and see what the PS2 was all about first, Sega could never shake that and didn't have the money to wait it out. If the proposition was for whatever reason that PS2/GameCube weren't coming for another few years, a lot more people probably would have bought a Dreamcast.
