That's because they try to make distinct versions of every game for different platforms, obviously that formula is not sustainable, even Iwata has admitted they can't keep doing that in the future.
But making 1 version of a 3D Mario and then being able to scale it up or down quickly for different platforms is much more doable, rather than making Mario 3D World for one console, then Mario 3D Land for a handheld, and then Mario Galaxy 3 for a future console ... that would be impossible for Nintendo.
I think based on Mr. Iwata is saying that this is the future that Nintendo envisions for their hardware and it will be a pretty fundamental shift for them.
