I'm inclined to trust them mainly because they've been around to experience what happens when a console maker starts pulling support too early and launching new hardware too early.

They saw what happened to Sega after they pulled support for the Saturn too early and released the Dreamcast. A lot of third-party devs became wary over supporting Sega after that move. Though Nintendo has little third party support to bank on currently, if they axed the Wii U too early third parties would definitely see Nintendo as desperate and potentially unstable.
