Wii - 100.95M (I think everyone has came up with the consensus that this sold mostly to the casuals)
I believe the consensus is wrong, but that's for another discussion.
Wii U - 5.78M ( Which I think it trending lower than the GC)
Honestly, I don't think advertising or more games will actually help the Wii U sell. People are just getting tired of Nintendo systems, and I don't think they can do anything about it.
Nope. It always comes down to games, pricing, and marketing. The Wii U obviously just isn't a good value proposition for gamers. A far less significant price advantage, weaker software support (few first-party games of note, an 8-month drought at the beginning of its life, and no major third-party games that can't be bought on the PS3 or 360), and poor marketing are why the Wii U is struggling.
Nintendo has brought most of their problems on themselves. Little if anything of it is due to forces outside their control.

For what it's worth, I believe the Wii was largely bought by video game fans who also owned one other console, fans who felt burned when Nintendo's promises about the Wii never were delivered upon. This is probably also one of the Wii U's greatest problems - no one wants to be fooled twice.
