What the subject says.. What are your favorite freeware games? I am not a huge fan of freeware games ( many of them are MMOs which is not a genre I care about), but there are 5 of them that I always enjoy playing.
5. Tyrian 2000- This is a SHMUP first released in 1995 for PC and it was released as freeware in 2004. You control a ship that has many weapons that you use to destroy all kind of shit ( just like in a typical SHMUP) and the bosses are also very great. What is so good about Tyrian 2000 besides its levels and bosses is the big number of secret levels ( Some of them are also found only in certain difficulty modes) and the customizable ships ( you can buy equipment for your ship among other things).
The soundtrack is pretty damn cool and I gotta give props to Alexander Brandon for composing it so nicely! You can listen to it here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AAIgYbqFkro I can easily recommend this to any SHMUP fan, so if you haven't play this game.............what are you waitin' for?!
4. Tribes Ascend- I haven't played this one in quite a while ( mostly because I always get my ass kicked), but I can easily say that this is one of the best freeware shooters you can find on PC. This game gives you three free classes which are Soldier, Pathfinder and Juggernaut and I think you can guess which one is the most kickass. Tribes Ascend is also known for the use of jetpacks which is a very important tool. Another important aspect is " skiing" which allows you to slide down slops ( that makes you much faster of course).
The game is also very fast paced and is simply gorgeous ( specially on max settings).
3. I wanna be the Guy- This damn game made me rage so many times and yet I keep playing it.... I just don't know why! IWBTG is a tough as shit 2D platformer with many random traps. Even normal dangers like spikes are annoying because their placement is simply dickish. This game includes stages from many NES games like Ghosts and Goblins, Kirby, Mega Man, Metroid, Castlevania and many others. The bosses include Mecha Birdo ( this is what happens when Birdo has a good time with a robot) , Mike Tyson, Bowser, Mother Brain, Wart, Kraidgrief ( a parody of Zangrief from Street Fighter) and many others.
This game has 4 difficulty modes which are Normal, hard, Very Hard, and Impossible. Do you wanna know the best parts? Hard is the default mode and there isn't an easy mode! Here is a video of it so you can see just how evil this game truly is: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EzxJgWbm_3I
2. Quake Live- I am a huge Quake 3 fan so I was extremely happy when I found out that Quake Live is a free game . Quake Live is a fast paced arena shooter where you defeat other players by using a huge variety of weapons like machine guns, rocket launchers, railguns, plasma guns and many others. You also collect health, armor, ammo and other stuff just like in a typical arena shooter.
It may not sound like much, but I like Quake Live so much because it's simply so fun and addicting. It almost makes me feel like I am playing Quake 3! It's that good.
1. Super Mario Bros Crossover- This is the original Super Mario Bros, but you can play as other characters like Link from Zelda, Samus from Metroid, Bill R. from Contra, Mega Man, Simon Belmont from Castlevania, Ryu from Ninja Gaiden, Sophia the 3rd from Blaster Master, Luigi and Bass from Mega Man 10! The characters handle exactly like they do in the original games and it simply feels so awesome ( Playing as Bill R from Contra is simply so badass. The spread gun makes everything even better!).
The 2.0 update brought many graphical updates while the 3.0 update added additonal character skins, stuff that allows the game to look like an Atari game and levels that are inspired by the limited-release Super Mario Bros Special. Each update makes this already awesome game even more awesome. I just can't imagine why a 4.0 update would need to exist. Maybe to make the characters 30 times faster than before? Who knows.
