(According to VGChartz) NES - 61.91M SNES - 49.1M N64 - 32.93M GC - 21.74M Wii - 100.95M (I think everyone has came up with the consensus that this sold mostly to the casuals) Wii U - 5.78M ( Which I think it trending lower than the GC) Honestly, I don't think advertising or more games will actually help the Wii U sell. People are just getting tired of Nintendo systems, and I don't think they can do anything about it. |
It is completely Nintendo's fault. People aren't tired of a piece if hardware, they are tired of being served up the same bloody games year after year. Though perhaps a lot of the core gamer market (and by core I mean people for whom gaming is a preferred entertainment / leisure activity, not people who like playing certain types of games) are also not terribly impressed at the much weaker hardware from Nintendo 2 generations running, though this is not part of the problem of the N64 or GC.
Nintendo could come roaring back into contention if they: 1) produced some compelling new IP, which isn't motion control sports/party/fitness; and 2) had a console with same or better HW specs; and 3) repair relations with 3rd parties. I think a new console in 2016 with slightly superior specs than PS4 and launching at the same price as PS4's 2016 price (should be achievable if specs are similar to PS4) along with several great new IPs would be a real challenge for Sony and MS.
