Innovation is key because without it, no matter what industry or field, you stagnate. It's actually one of the key attributes that makes the humans so great at survival from an evolutionary standpoint; our brains allow us to innovate solutions to complex problems. Now you may have innovative solutions that don't take off, but without risk takers we wouldn't get anywhere.
The problem isn't with innovation, but a lot of people claim innovation when they've simply iterated on previous work. True innovation is actually rare.
