Just for reference sake Nintendo had shipped just a hair under 10 million GameCubes at the equivalent same point in its lifespan (March 2003), Wii U will be under 6 million, so it's well behind the GameCube right now.

With its best software still ahead of it, again. It's the same awkward little fact there. GC was far more front-loaded and had its severe problems in legging it out.

The GameCube wasn't quite as front loaded as people like to make out, even if it was more front loaded.

Mario Kart: Double Dash, Resident Evil 4, Zelda: Wind Waker (US/Euro release), Pikmin 2, Metal Gear Solid: Twin Snakes, Viewtiful Joe, F-Zero GX, Metroid Prime 2 were still waiting to be released ... that isn't miles removed from the Wii U's impending 2014/2015 with Mario Kart 8, Zelda U, Smash Bros. U, Bayonetta 2, Yarn Yoshi, X, Hyrule Warriors, Fire Emblem x SMT, etc.
