I don't necessary agree that Dk bombed - it will have decent legs and will get nice boosts during the holiday seasons. It will underperform relative to the series standards, but it will be a success in its own right like 3D World.
In my opinion - Nintendo has been far too conservative with their vision and software strategy with the wii u. The problem isn't the Wii U - it is Nintendo. The Wii U's vision has not been shown with the software shown so far - as they have been strictly new iterations of long standing franchises, and not to mention that the gamepad isn't integral (besides wonderful 101 and Pikmin). Nintendo is simply catering to their fans - preaching to believers. New ideas bring new excitement - they need software that excites xbox fans, sony fans and the mass market - they are limiting themselves with their current approach.
Hopefully, they have acknowledged this.
