I think Sony are trying to keep the PS4 primarily as a gaming device, with the other media functions a secondary selling point.
Microsoft are seemingly trying to keep the media features on a level peg with the gaming features.
We will see which strategy is the best with which sells the most lifetime... But as of right now, there is no denying the general public has made a choice. They want the cheaper gaming-focused machine opposed to the more expensive "all in one" entertainment device. You just have to look at the advertising to see what each company is going for.
On top of this, the majority of Microsofts non-gaming features are aimed specifically at the American audience. This is why the system is showing extremely bad numbers outside of the US.
