They could release a newer version every 12-18 months if they wanted. It would have to use the same basic architecture for programming and just like PC's it could be scaled performance wise. So, if you had a year one XB1, it might run a game at 900p and 40 fps. A year 2 XB1 would run at 1080p and 60fps. Developers could easily write the games that way, it could auto recognize which system and run that version. That's a bad idea for many reasons, which the poster below me will explain.

It would lose the one major advantage that consoles have over PC(platform equivalency), damage the brand (similar to what happened to Sega, an incorporate a perversion of a pc disadvatange (while buying a new gpu might be all you need to upgrade your pc, you would need a new retail xb1 for the spec increase. Sure you can determine whether to buy a new model, but you wouldn't be able to choose when or what you upgrade, and how much you want to spend for it.
