They never did that with Xbox 360 controllers, at least not wireless ones with play n play wired attached.  Kind of annoyed me I had 2 360 wireless controllers already but had to buy a third wired controller to use it on PC. (the wireless adapters for wireless controllers are more expansive than a wired controler...).

MS came out with a dongle for the wireless controllers.  I use it at home all the time.
