By selling 100m consoles, less than two of Sony's consoles that came before? It didn't really expand the market, it just inflated it for a short while.

Oh. Then what was your point? There's no denying that most of the apparent "contraction" is due to Nintendo's recent fall from grace after enjoying a few short years at the top of everything.
3rd party publishers failing again and again to make a viable profit on Nintendo's consoles, while many of them enjoy massive successes on MS and Sony's.
Yet here you are saying MS and Sony are to blame. I don't get your logic.
