Well I think it's another reason to drop the gamepad actually and go with a cheaper Wii U model with screen-less controller that still has a cheap NFC chip built-in.
For a parent it's pay $300 for Wii U + $50-$60 for the game/"starter pak" (or whatever for figures) or ....
Buy Skylanders, Disney Infinity, or Star Wars NFC or Marvel Comics NFC (confirmed to be coming in 2014) for the Wii/360/PS3 you already have in your home and spend some of that $300 you were going to use on the Wii U on Skylander/Disney/Marvel/Star Wars toys for your kids.
$300 for the Wii U is too expensive if Nintendo really wants to make head way with this market to the average parent and the kid will probably be happier with 5-6 different new Skylanders/Disney/Marvel/whatever characters that the parent saved $$$ by not having to pony up $300 for the console itself.
I kinda have the feeling that it could be a lot 20-35 year old males buying these Nintendo NFC toys.
