The hype stems from the products image, public perception and its perceived value.
PR and advertising has run without a hitch since the initial unveil, and the ethos of a system that is designed purely for gamers, without any segregation or shift in focus, seems to have resonated with the hardcore. It's also been a masterstroke of design (mixed with a bit of luck), it's smaller, sleeker and yet rather astonishingly, also more powerful and less expensive than it's main competitor.
It doesn't matter what industry you're in, if a recognized brand launches a product that looks more appealing and gives higher performance at a cheaper price, the market will react.
