The 3DS is doing great. It is the best selling current gen console, and Nintendo's 1st party is churning out one amazing game after another for the handheld like there's no tomorrow. Therein perhaps lies the problem though. Have they been using too much of their resources making games for the 3DS rather than the Wii U?

Although Nintendo said they were caught off guard by the time it took develop HD games, there is a huge disparity between the amount of games that came out for the 3DS compared to the Wii U. Are too many of Nintendo's 1st party studios focusing on the 3DS as opposed to the Wii U? What do you think?

First off, it's not the best selling current gen console, it's a HANDHELD. The best selling current gen console is PS4. Second, no, it's not the problem. The DS was selling much better and the Wii sold 100 million units.

People just need to chill. I own a Wii-U, it's fun and Miiverse is the best online community of all three. It's just not going to sell that well because it's a niche product. It'll make a profit, and all will be well and Nintendo will be fine.

DS and Wii were vastly different, for one DS was mostly 2D with a select few 3D games while Wii could handle 3D games well. Also DS has touch controls and Wii had motion controls.

Compare that to 3DS vs Wii U. Both can comfortably handle 3D graphics, both offer dual screen gameplay, both have touch controls and motion capabilites. To ur typical consumer, Wii U could simply seem like an HD home version of 3DS. Also many of the current and upcoming big hitters for Wii U are very similar to the 3DS version.

Mario 3D Land vs Mario 3D World, NSMB2 vs NSMBU, Ocarina of Time 3D vs Wind Waker HD, DKC Returns vs DKC Tropical Freeze, Mario Kart 7 vs Mario Kart 8, Smash Bros 3D vs Smash Bros U and both have Monster Hunter 3 Ultimate, Lego City Undercover, Sonic Lost World. Then u have to take into account other big games on 3DS like Pokemon X/Y, Animal Crossing, Luigi's Mansion, Monster Hunter 4, Zelda Link Between Worlds, Paper Mario, Mario & Luigi, Fire Emblem, Nintendogs, Mario Party, Kirby, Mario Tennis, Mario Golf, Yoshi New Island, Kid Icarus, Kingdom Hearts, Bravely Default, and it costs about 1/2 of the Wii U.

Im not trying to say 3DS is the sole reason why Wii U is struggling but its very possible it plays a role in it. If ur just looking for a Nintendo/RPG fix then 3DS is the perfect gaming device. Wii U will be fine tho, It just needs more defining software and to come down in price.
