Sort of agree, I think that the 8th gen is where developers need to shed a lot of diluted and spent gameplay mechanics in order to reel in sales, even franchises like Call of Duty will suffer from heavy fatigue.
Having 3-4 titles setting the bar for almost everyone else is not good for anyone; it's a creative yoke that prevents variation and depth and as long as reviewers keep on hammering the 9's and consumers, the false sense of worth in modern software will persist.

Part of the problem for me is that I'm sick of developers chasing after the next big fad, then they stumble upon it and milk it to death, the proverbial box to think outside has gotten smaller and smaller for creativity despite the industry growing. My hope lies with the Indies in the coming years though; I have had some amazing game experiences due to the small guys.
