I think they both may have to:
-Nintendo needs to utilise it's success in the handheld arena to buoy up it's flagging console business
-Sony needs to use their successful console to save their dying handheld
In fact, we can already see Sony moving towards this in the way that you can use the Vita in a similar way to the Gamepad.
I think Nintendo will beat Sony to the punch however, but mainly because I think the Wii U's successor will be out much earlier than the PS5.
