Wait, so the normal X1 for $400 and then an even cheaper SKU?

I kinda doubt that, but if true then MS can't be too happy with the current X1 performance.

This always seemed a no brainer to me. I always expected 399 in late 2014.

In a way it's a pretty smart move, you soak the early adopters for the big bucks. They're willing to pay it. Otherwise those profits just go to ebayers (as Sony has probably lost a lot of money to ebayers!)

Also, Microsoft cant afford too fall too far behind PS4.

The Xbox One will be very cheap to make once Kinect falls in price. DDR3 is way cheaper than GDDR5. The only real surprise was that they didn't launch at 399.

I don't think it is smart to launch at $500 if they could have launched at $400, it's costing them a ton of marketshare, especially in Europe and while I think they might recapture that masketshare in the US with an X1 that is equally priced to the PS4, they don't have the slightest chance of doing that in Europe.

The X1 had already lost the main advantage the 360 had over the PS3, namely being alone on the market for a year, to then deliberately sell the X1 for more than they'd need to would not only be stupid it would also be quite arrogant.
