The game gets "better" later, but "better" is relative to how it was when it started. Overall, it's not the ambitious title that many wanted to see for Nintendo's first HD 3D Mario. It's a good game, has a good amount of creativity, but it lacks any sort of "wow" value that previous console 3D Marios had. This one had virtually little to no wow value.

I dunno about that even to be honest. The soundtrack for example I think in the end is as good as either Galaxy game. It's the best looking Mario 3D game (yes mostly because it's on the most powerful hardware, but mmm hmmmm Nintendo-ey goodness in HD). The amount of call backs and nostalgia shoved into this game also trump the Galaxy games which always felt kinda ... disconnected from the other Mario games. This one has very clear call backs to SMB1, SMB2 (USA), SMB3, SM World, SM64, and the Galaxy games and even a certain famous other Mario game (won't spoil it).

It's a (very) crude analogy and I hope no one takes offense because it's not my intent, but its like meeting a pretty girl who you click with personality wise but finding out later she's very "giving" in the love making department (ahem, downstairs).
