Kind of similar to what happened with 3DS XL really.  Released a much improved model in many ways but it had crap speakers compared to the original 3DS.  

I wouldn't say that the screen issue is as clear cut as it seems, either.  Objectively I think OLED is better but it still suffers from burn in and mura effects and some of the colour pallette is a lot further off being "correct" than the LED screen.

I'm considering a Vita 2000 simply for the battery life & better ergonomics.  For me, the screen is a downgrade but the other improvements vastly outweigh that, so overall I'd consider it an improved version.

And I'd disagree.  The screen is the main part of the device.  It was one of the key selling points in all the original marketing by Sony for a reason.  The only reason it is being removed is cost... not to improve the device.  Lets at least be honest about it.

Did you get one of the original Vita models? While pure blacks look lovely on it there are times where it gives a strange artifact effect in some games. Point being that @ bold it was a key selling point, the console didn't sell based on that point, now they're just going all out to show off the systems other features and games galore.
