Nintendo made a horrible decision by not being innovative enough with the Wii U. There is a reason why the Wii was the best selling console for Nintendo: It offered new experiences never seen before - it was really innovative.

The Wii U gamepad is a joke in terms of innovation compared to the Wii remote was.

I think Iwata 'gets it' now and will never ever again release a traditional or semi-traditional console and try to cater to the 'dudebros' again. If Iwata was smart he will have the next console will be so innovative, so revolutionary, so non-traditional because based on precedence and just plain common sense that is where they thrive and succeed.

Will be fun to see if they pull that off.  Until then the Wii is a one-off success.  Can we assume that Nintendo can innovate and get it right consistently based off one success?
