The reason the Wii U has been failing in the past months is the lack of support it recieves. When it does recieve a game, it is usually a gimped port, old port, or "shovelware" games. There are so many games that could have helped the Wii U gain traction during the long drought of games in early to mid 2013.
Tomb Raider (2013)

Released on March 5 2013, it was a well recieved gme that ended up selling quite well on XB360 and PS3. The Wii U was definatlely strong enough to handle it.
Metal Gear Rising (2013)

Released back in Feburary 2013, It sold around just above 1 million on PS3 and a mind boggling 330,000 on XB360. Could have sold maybe 250,000 on Wii U.
GTA 5 (2013)

Released back on September, this game was an instant blockbuster. It sold over 10 million on each platform, and could have sold about 500,000 - 1 million on the Wii U.
It's just that 3rd parties didn't want anything to do with Nintendo's latest home console despite it having the more capabilities than XB360 and PS3 have, and will also miss out this year on games like MGS5 and Thief just to name a few.
