If your father is just interested in talking to the tv, wouldn't he be far more likely to get the comcast x1 or another cable box that does that? The X1 is only $50-$100 if you already have cable. It doesn't sound like he's interested in gaming, so even at $400 Microsoft would have a really hard time selling to this crowd.

I mean... if he knows about it and his speciific cable operator has it.  (If he has cable).

I mean... I've never heard of it and i imagine i'm at least as well informed as your average old dude.

Why were Ipod's so successful even though there were cheaper and better MP3 players out there... and MP3 players out there way before the Ipod released?

Successful marketing, marketing it to the casual segement who didn't even know mp3 players were a thing really.

Xbone really does have a small chance of being successful by playing up the interlinking/run everyting features of the Xbone...

but it hasn't really tried.

So the chance does seem small.

Plus there's always the chance casuals just don't show up to play in big numbers this gen.  It happened before with the Atari.  Instead of migratign to PC gaming it could end up being phone.  (Well and facebook)

Yes marketing is huge. Right now I'm seeing tons of X1 commercials. It feels like they come up with a new one every week. Right now it's an Xfinity vs CenturyLink ad. Unless Microsoft kicks it in gear and advertises TV voice commands as a core feature instead of a bonus feature, they're losing this match.

I'd enjoy all those extra XBONE features, but they are just reasons to pick it up instead of a PS4. Not reasons to bring in a new market.
