They only matter if the previous games weren't under the radar, and the new game isn't the most hyped game in existance.
2 examples are MGS3 vs MGS4 and SSB:M vs SSB:B.
I wonder why we feel the need to compare and compete game sales against each other. If the games are within 100,000 of each other, on the internet, some fanboys will be "owned" but in reality, it doesn't matter one iota, one way or another.
