It never could. MK and other Mario games didn't help GC or N64 win their generations, what makes people think that Mario games would make Wii U come back into prominence this generation? Because lots of new people discovered Mario on Wii? People who only first discovered Mario on Wii are hardly the sort of people who are devoted to the franchise, and many of those people are probably only interested in one of the versions of Mario, either 2D, or 3D or Kart. This is why NSMBU and SM3DW haven't set the Wii U on fire.

If Wii U is going to be saved from being a monumental disappointment it's going to take something other than just Nintendo's mascot.

Oh i completely agree, with saving i didn't mean it would suddenly sale like hotcakes. With saving i mean it would start selling ''ok'' and might have atleast a chance to beat the Gamecube, but even that seems hard with these kind of drops.
