Nintendo has gone from making around $2 billion a year from DS+Wii to making $0 a year from DS+3DS+Wii+Wii U. The sales of Wii U are very important to fixing that equation.
Nintendo is burning through $1.5+ billion a year running their company and developing their games. The 3DS & Wii are paying all the bills for now. It is very important that the number of Wii U consoles increase at a good pace so that Wii U can also pay the bills as Wii is declining.
If Wii U keeps missing expectations Nintendo will likely need a major downsize to return to stronger profitability.
