Wiimote support is very common on Wii U, there is no sign they plan to retire it. And you're missing the whole point; the Wiimote was merely the vehicle for what the Wii achieved; broadening the demographic range of gaming.
And popularity doesn't mean something is any good. Justin Beiber, Twilight, and McDonalds are popular.
