Somini said: It has it easier than most games actually. A lot of reviewers score them based on nostalgia. Something a game like, say Titanfall won't have. |
That doesn't mean it has it easier at all, really. A lot of reviewers today idealize the previous game entries and lower a score for not living up to their nostalgic memories. There's a very very good example of this nostalgia working against a game in some of the reviews for A Link Between Worlds.
In fact, here's the one I'm talking about: A Link Between Worlds' main problem at the end of the day is a complete lack of anything that's memorable. There's no defining moment, no newly minted classic villains or characters, and no truly "new" items that make their mark on the series. It's certainly playable in every sense of the word, but I didn't feel the same spark I had felt so many times before.

Yet it holds a 91/100 in Metacritic!

What's your point? Are you trying to convince me that a 91 means it got there because of nostalgia?
Also, look at The Last of Us' metacritic score. It's a new IP and it holds 95/100.
What I'm trying to say is that Zelda doesn't get a free pass for nostalgia. It's a double-edged sword and can harm a game's score. A new IP isn't judged harshly because it's new. By the same token, a game isn't judged positively just because of nostalgia.
