Who knows, they might have added it, but honestly, they had to get this game out the door asap. I shudder to think how long it would've taken them to develop, test and implement a _proper_ online mode. The game would've been delayed well into Q1 2014, best-case scenario. They simply could not afford that.
Anyway, that he said they've been experimenting with online since Mario Galaxy is pretty interesting... I'm willing to expect the next proper Mario title on Wii U will include an online multiplayer mode. Most likely won't come out before 2015, though.
