I really think this whole "unification" is a hint at the future of the companies hardware plans. Maybe a handheld that has an HDMI out? Nintendo loves to set trends and go their own rout, and that would definitely be the first of it's kind. They could sell it as a console that can be taken on the go, rather than a handheld that plugs into your TV. It would have all of the 3DS goodness software wise with the quality visuals of their consoles. They could even churn out more games this way because they would only have to develop for one system.
