Just look at GTAV sales on PS3. It had slighly less competitors than GT6 (let's say 2800 games) but it managed to do 8,964,391 on the first week, a huge step up from the 2,479,637 done by GTAIV. Why? Because of the huge difference in install base between May 2008 and September 2013 (12.3m vs 78.8m). So as you can see the number of games available on the system is not a big enough factor to counterbalance a difference in install base. |
Can you think of any other examples apart from GTAV that have done better this year compared to last year? Cuz I can't think of anything at the moment.
I know that Assassin's, Battlefield, COD are doing worse.
The reason that people (mistakenly) call Mario 3d world a flop is because it did not help move many systems, unlike WIIU party (at least in Japan). A few weeks ago I also noticed the one year old 2d Mario outselling 3d mario in Japan. How's that not a case of a title underperforming?
People need to realize that this is a very complicated matter and simple comments like "installbase, dude" do not explain everything. The OP is right. BOTH are underperforming for being the two most powerful franchises that Sony and Ninty respectively own, but for different reasons.
