Which was the best generation

I'm torn between the 4th and 7th generations. The 4th was definately a Golden Age ahead of the 2nd and 3rd gens, but the 5th gen aged fairly poorly all things considered and the 6th was a bit dull for my inner Nintendo fan. The 7th brought the most diversity of platforms, genres, and scale yet, even with so many games being similar, but I'm not sure if it fulfilled its promise the same way the Genesis, SNES, and Game Boy fulfilled theirs'.
