Assuming every single downloader would have went to the theater and watched the movie had pirating not been an option, yes, that is a lot of money.

Of course just like gaming piracy, the reality is a very small minority of people would have went and experienced it legally, so not much lost money actually.

If one million of the original 8,4 million that downloaded the Hobbit would have bought it legaly then it is quite a lot of money. Many (notice, I didn't say most) that downloads movies this way would have bought them otherwise.
