I enjoy the 2d metroid games (the Prime games weren't exactly my cup of tea but I think that's because that type of game simply isn't my thing) but I don't obsess over any of the metroid games. I do agree with your statement though and I think it's because Metroid is the only Nintendo game that is consistently geared towards the so called "hardcore" gamers. Zelda often is too, but also often has a more kid friendly story/art style; whereas Metroid is always a violent, sometimes really scary game series.
