I think it fit in nicely with the depiction of Sauron in the LOTR movies. Each time somone was influenced by Sauron's power we saw a flash of his eye. The "endless" zoom was a nice way to show it's indeed Sauron in person that Gandalf is facing. It's also a good way to visualize how he tortures those who are brought before him (I think this topic was only brought up in the books though), casting an illusion on their mind. |
Sauron becoming the pupil of the eye was cool and worked well as you say, but did they have to do the perpetual zoom thing? It just made it look like they ran out of ideas.
