I'm not going to say really anything about the fault rates, but the thing the writer said about cleaning; i wouldn't say that cleaning wouldn't require taking it to the service, since as far i know, in service they wipe the lenses of optical drives with solution, while the "cleaning discs" just scratch the lens. When using a solution, it can leave a layer in the lens surface, which prevents it to get dirty again. And another thing in recalling faulty products is that when sent to service, it can be definately fixed, instead of sending a way to clean it, no matter what causes the issue and recalling is usually considered good customer service.
But yeah, the issue itself seems to be lens, if it can be cleaned, that could get too dirty and a number of faulty drives. Maybe some certain suppliers drives/lenses/read heads?
