Yeah it's probably a mistake on some Nintendo rep's fault. I think they say "yeah it's 1080p" to everything because the image does get scaled up to 1080p regardless, but they don't understand 1080p native is something different.
They've said things like this before IIRC with Pikmin 3 and NSMBU or other games I think and then had to be corrected afterwards.
