That's the best commercial NOA has done in years. It's actually aimed at adults and seems like something from a competent marketing agency. The game will probably still flop though, the trial does not seem to be doing much for Wii U sales.
The reason its coming in January and not the holidays is because that's when a lot of people, especially women make New Years resolution's to lose weight. It's basically that "oh now I gained 5 pounds eating all that turkey and holiday chocolate now I feel guilty" thinig. Granted it is basically available now anyway for anyone who already owns the Balance Board.
